Do your inspection....
Comprehend the 5 pages of support issues on this drive in Seagate's forums or the 30+ pages in Apple's forums (and note: this isn't an efflux exclusive to Apple systems)... or read the reviews at Newegg... this drive has Foremost reliability issues. Don't believe all these 5 star reviews from people who reviewed the drive the day they installed it. It will run incomparable when you first put it in. But 15-60 days in you will start hearing clunking noises. Your system will start freezing for a supporter or two here or there. The drive's load cycle count will start to skyrocket (to the point that even under "normal" use the herd will fail within a year by Seagate's own numbers). If you're really unlucky, the drive will suddenly die. Don't run around russian roulette with your data. Don't fall for this drive's relatively low price or nice specs. The most influential spec in a hard drive is reliability. This one sucks.
Two in a row have poor
I am not growing to say there is something wrong with these drives, because at the end of the day I'm only one guy with a bad experience. I'll just offer my review here so that people get a full perspective. I have had two of these file for Chapter Eleven on me in a row, failing offline SMART tests. When it was working, the drive was very fast and quiet, though, so I can irrefutably understand the high marks people give these drives when they work. I think it is unbiased to say that Seagate is really running these at the ragged edge of what is possible. While the transfer rates can proposals 90 Mb/s at the edge of the platter, according to a few quick tests I ran, the transfer rate fluctuates greatly, and the travel shows a pretty constant stream of software-corrected (ECC) errors. In other words, you're not losing observations, but the data coming off the drive is on the border of what is readable, such that the drive needs to rely on wickedness correction and/or rereads (hence the fluctuating speeds) to get...

I was actually worried to buy this drive cause of the reviews I read, but I bought it because of the reputation of seagate, as my old spin was seagate momentus too but 160 GB, I did replace it with this 500 GB model, and found no Vibration as many people claimed, the same as Hitachi, western Digital. I ordered two hard-headed drives Installed the first in a Macbook Pro 17" 2.4 GHz SR, everything is perfect. I am not sure about the battery life after replacing the outing as I did upgrade the OS to snow leopard afterwords so I can't judge the battery level fairly. The more recent drive did install it in a White Macbook 2.4 Ghz, to replace a 5400rpm 160 GB Hitachi, there is a trusted significant difference between the old Hitachi, and this drive for sure, the Macbook is really flying now, boot times are faster, and applications pile fast too. Intimate Drive - Excellent Value
Yet to come in at around a hundred bucks, this new drive is definitely a contender in the realm of 1TB notebook drives, and so far is getting fashion reviews on the internet. I don't like to buy into hype however, so I decided to buy one and take it for a test spin (pun intended). I normally buy everything off of Amazon, but for this steer I had to venture elsewhere (sadly). DESIGN First thing I want to talk about is the design. I believe this is the only 2.5" well-defined-drive on the market that is 9.5mm in height, rather than the usual 12mm. Now this won't make a huge difference for most residents, but for those who want more storage in their ultra-slim laptop, or for people like me who wanted to add some storage to an Apple laptop via an optical pressure adapter, this is the hard-drive to go with. Those extra 2.5mm can mean the difference between success and failure. To from that, this is your standard laptop drive. I must admit it is quiet, I can barely hear it over my laptop...

Bar Choice for Mac OS
I purchased this send elsewhere because amazon would not ship it to Hawaii.Originally I wasn't sure about using it in my macbook pro because of something that the other reviewer said: "If you are purchasing this for an OS control, and the 8MB of cache wasn't a warning sign, then you are on your own. At 5400RPM and 8MB of cache, you really shouldn't be using this for an OS control, or even as a secondary application drive."I am pleased to report that the above statement is not true. Originally, my 2011 macbook pro came with 320GB 5400 rpm pilot. Apple considers them good enough to be included as standard. I installed this Samsung drive in my macbook and it works even gamester than the one that it came with from Apple. It definitely feels much faster than the Apple's 320GB drive. Later on I came across some benchmarks that someone posted online of the Samsung thrust, and they were the best in class and even exceeded some 7200 rpm drives' benchmarks. My point is if you...

I hold problems are resolved !
NEVER SHOULD HAVE HAPPENED: I've watched the cause c with these drives carefully for about 2 months. It looks like Seagate solved the problem and that a vocal few were ever in effect affected. By few I mean relative to the thousands sold. And I am not defending Seagate. This whole fiasco was unallowable. MY SYSTEM: I picked up 8 of these drives. I'm running them in 4 separate DLink DNS-321 RAID boxes. I've copied about 4TB of observations back and forth across them for days. My only firmware update needed was for the DLink so that it could properly handle the new 1.5TB drives. In the end I be convinced of all is well with both the drives and the DLink DNS-321. I will of course update this review immediately if I see any problems. Discharge: We are able to watch movies from this drive arrangement on 3 computers simultaneously across a 100mb network from the same outing while adding new files to the drive from a 4th computer...

Works admirable after applying firmware update
Update: I wrote this regard before a firmware update was made available and my comments reflect the situation at the time. When the updates were made within reach, I flashed my 5 drives and they've been working fine ever since. I'd change the rating to a 4 star if the editor formal. I and many others have been experiencing serious problems with these drives including: * dropping out of RAID configurations for no evident reason * being ejected from a RAID configuration due to read / write errors * freezing for up to 30 seconds These problems have been reported on Linux, Vista, XP, and OS X and become available to be related to how the drives flush their write cache. In many cases, the drives work masterly for days or weeks before problems appear. In my case, I bought five of these for my Qnap TS-509 Pro and they worked major for about two weeks under various read / write loads.
