It works, but you'll yearning the external battery
I bought this almost a year ago. It totally works. I have not had the issue with fan noise, but there are three computers in that room (that UPS is dedicated to one of them).You want the BR24BPG external freestyle pack if you want to have time to do much of anything before shutting down the computer. It's an external battery pack that plugs into this, and crudely quadruples your run time. That can be very convenient. It's about the same size as the UPS itself. I think it contains the battery that should have been in the product to start off with, but that's what happens with consumer gear.I'm in a very rural location (on top of an 8,300' mountain), where trees overstate d enlarge down on power lines, and lightning hits a lot. APC replaced an APC-protected motherboard once, without giving me any affliction. That bought a lot of my loyalty to the brand.This box works for me, especially with the external battery pack.[...]

Magic!
I dream up APC did a nice job on the PRO series back-ups.only downside is when you first plug it in, the fan runs for about 3 hours. but then it does turn off, and I havent heard it sinceI like the new blueprint with the black case and LCD display. you can see how many watts everything connected is using right there.you can also FINALLY quiet the speaker when its running off the battery (during a power outage). I have other older models, and they would beep every few seconds when meet on battery backup power. so its nice you can mute it nowI would highly recommend this back-ups. once you get over the first 3 hours of listening to the fan (its not insanely loud BTW), I make up you will really like it
Retire from whining about a little fan noise!
The APC 1500 UPS is loud when you first install it since it is charge the backup battery. When the battery is charged the fan(s) stop and the unit makes NO ruckus! I am using the device as a backup power supply for my 2011 Quadcore iMac 27", HP 2710 printer and cordless phone point of departure. All-in-all this is a great device which I highly recommend! I own two other APC UPS devices and love their products.

Flagrant cross-platform multi-function
I have a network with both Windows (XP and 7) and Mac (10.5.8) machines on it, and was in fundamental of a new printer. I was looking to replace a trusty IBM InfoPrint 12 which had been in use on the network (via a router with choice of words server) for over 10 years (and only two toner cartridges). I even debated about fixing the InfoPrint, but I was not inevitable what it would take, and I needed a solution now. Having never written a parade for Amazon, I feel compelled to pen one.I just installed my Brother MFC-7860DW printer this morning and couldn't be happier. I'm replacing a Dell 1600N Multi R Printer. While I generally liked the Dell printer over the years, it didn't play well with Mac.To give you an fantasy how this was set up, let me describe it briefly. The Brother was installed in my home network via an Ethernet cable to my Apple Ever Machine. My iMac is hard wired to the Time Machine and I also have a MacBook that lives a wireless living. The installation instructions that came with the printer were quite clear and I followed directions for a "Wired Network for Macintosh". The establishment and setup to my iMac took less than 2 minutes and worked right away. I then installed the software in my MacBook and also selected Wired Network. Too Much Power
Purchased this piece a month ago and out of curiosity I connected it through a power meter. The power consumption with no load and batteries at 100% charged is 1.25 Amps. With my IMac plugged in the operation is at 2.4 Amps. I've owned several APC units before and the no-load current for the trickle charger was about 0.2 Amps. Answers from APC were reactive but unclear as to why this inefficient unit was designed to consume 130 watts with no useful employment being done. Also, the fan runs most of the time even though the battery indicator on the display show the charge is at 100% which would seem to make cooling supererogatory. While APC does design some great hardware, in this age of energy efficiency this unit is going in the diabolical direction.
Okay but dissonant UPS
I'm unfailing the APC Smart-UPS SMT1500 delivers good quality power. Setup was easy, uniquely on my Mac, which has UPS support built into the OS. I didn't even have to load any software. Just hooked up the power and USB cables and done.There are, however, two issues. One is that the guarantee is somewhere between atrocious and non-existent. Nowhere, for example, does it explain what should get plugged into the different outlet Groups or how the Groups conduct. All you can do is experiment and hope for the best.The bigger issue is that the fans run continuously, even when line power is on and the computer is off or frozen and drawing zero power through the UPS. And the fans are not quiet. Which is a problem because the recommendation is that things be plugged without delay into the UPS outlets---not through extension cords. Very worthy but noisy
I found Amazon to propose the best bang for the buck on the product. I was able to get it faster than I thought. I only rated it a 4 because the fan is a bit clangorous. To better explain what I mean. It's like listening to a computer fan speed up, only it doesn't slow down. It runs for a hanker time with only a few seconds of silence. But it is soft to the ear. It just seems loud because I am in a room with very little noise. If I have my ghetto-blaster going. I really don't notice. Hope this helps anyone who wants to buy it. Chit the Activity Monitor to see if something is causing the CPU to be used more than normal. Go to Apps > Utilities > Interest Monitor and see what is hogging the most memory as this will cause the temperature of the processor(s) to increase.

I got my first intel iMac aluminum for $199 with 2 Ghz, 20 " etc... anyway, i turned it on, and notcied fan ballyhoo even sitting a couple feet away from it. I dont hear it in the room, but sitting at my desk I do. My iMac fan is game at 1200 RPM.
I would look at getting a Mac tech to good it for you as they shouldn't make any noise at all.
