About the size of a small paperback hard-cover and weighing less than 8 ounces, the GPSMAP 76 fits comfortable in the palm of your hand, but is a bit big to conduct in a shirt pocket. Using the unit requires almost no setup. Just put in two AA batteries, ride it on, go outside, and wait. In about a minute or so it will determine your location. It's accurate to about three meters, thanks to the section's support of WAAS (Wide Area Augmentation System), which augments GPS signals for even greater correctness.
Knowing your longitude, latitude, and altitude doesn't mean much without a little context. That's where GPSMAP 76's backlit LCD manifestation comes in, displaying your location on detailed maps. The unit comes with a built-in basemap that includes larger roads, railroads, rivers, and lakes for the U.S. and Canada, as well as a high-level worldwide map. The item also has 8 MB memory for storing maps from optional CD-ROMS; available maps include topographical maps, BlueChart sea cartography maps, as well as city maps with detailed information on city streets and points of interest.

It showed both the elevation of the hills as well as the paths we could take. The zoom-in and zoom-out function made it Spartan to plan out and automatically measure the distance of our intended route.
After walking for a while and enjoying the scenery, we familiar the TracBack mode to guide us back to our car. The unit automatically stores waypoints as you walk along, letting you betray the way home clearly on the map. We even used the TracBack capability to guide us on the roads back to the freeway.

A Terrific Sea Kayaking Companion
Before my GPS win, I considered a number of Magellan units in addition to some in the Garmin E Trex series. I in the long run decided on the Garmin Map76.In addition to being relatively easy to use, I preferred the slightly larger screen of the Map76 over the other units. Since I was purchasing the element to use while sea kayaking, I found the screen on the Map76 was much easier to read in the sunlight than the smaller screens on the E-Trex models. In adding up, you can upload map data into this unit. (Although the unit includes a basemap, Garmin also manufactures a bevy of optional mapping products which cover roads, waterways and topographical features in more detail). For kayaking, I use the non-mandatory BlueCharts which is essentially like having Nautical maps at your fingertips. Hits the sloppy spot for GPS price/performance...
So I in fine got around to upgrading my trusty 3 year old Garmin 12XL to a new GPSMAP 76. I played with one of the Magellan 330s at the regional store for comparison but found that once again I simply prefer the Garmin user interfaces. I also picked up the MetroGuide CD. I figured if I was contemporary to upgrade to a mapping GPS, I'd really want richly detailed maps. Surprisingly, I've proficient no buyer's remorse whatsoever. The GPSMAP 76 is nothing short of miraculous! Garmin is to be commended for the improvements they've made to their artifact line over the years.The internal quad-helix antenna is excellent. Position correctness is superb, screen resolution is vastly improved, and the extras such as tidal and celestial info are a absolutely nice touch. The optimal fishing/hunting time predictor seems like overkill but I'll bet there are users who promise by it. I'd buy it again, but gosh how about a trifling more RAM?
I dearest the screen, compared to the others. That is the most compelling feathure. The Mapsource info was more detailed than I expected. Tracked correctly on an old Georgia logging passage I hunt from. I didn't expect it to be there. I did find some signal loss in deep woods though, the Lorance seems to have a better sensor if that is a problem for you. My dropouts were more momentary than extended though.Battery life was as advertised about 12 hrs, honorarium that's using ONLY 2 AA batteries. I used the light on screen as little as possible though.Has all the features most could wish for. My understanding is WAAS is very limited at this time, DOD will shoot some more birds up in the future, but don't count on it for now. I habituated to this in FLA, GA, Wash state, Lower Alberta and BC provinces and was satisfied overall w/ basemaps and response... but never got WAAS. P.S. I would not trust basemap to navigate by (e.g. boat in fog). Resolution not enuf; joyously it erred in my favor, said I...

Misleading and very costly: purchaser beware
Although the packaging offers span of the U.S., Canada, Caribbean, and South America on this expensive CD, you can only unlock a very limited "region" with your original acquisition. Says Garmin tech support, "When you purchase BlueChart, you're entitled to one free jurisdiction, and then additional regions can be purchased for $116.65." The word "free" here reflects Garmin's largely abysmal use of language found on their Web site, a labyrinth of obfuscation tangled in their arcane and ultra-paranoid "unlocking" technology and secret prices. Unlike their Topo and City Navigator CDs where you get a lot of maps for your money, BlueChart gave me a minimal sliver of southwest Florida for my purchase price. When I went to load Cape Cod, I discovered I would dearth to pony up another $116 for this small region. To unlock everything on this CD would costs many, many thousands of dollars, and nowhere is this definite to the unwary consumer.What is especially grating in all this is that...

Encyclopaedic, fast, and easy to use
The Garmin "Bluecharts" are vector charts, which means they use mathematic algorithms to put by all the lines and features of a nautical chart. I have steered away from these in the past because they tended to give up a lot of detail vs. "Raster Picturesque" charts, which are essentially photographic images of paper charts.With "Bluecharts" they have gotten to a standing of detail (including multiple colors) that they look almost as good as a paper charts. The advantages of vector charts is that they take up much less leeway on your hard drive and run much faster on a PC. This is important when you are zooming in and out to see your depth or proximity to a wreck while mobile on a boat.I use mine with an eTrex Legend and am able to load most of the detail (depth, obstructions, nautical aids, etc) onto the handheld. Really the best!
I'll cut straighten up to the chase--if you have a Garmin GPS unit that is MapSource compatible, and use it on the ocean, buy this CD! Garmin's Water Ways & Lights CD is a gross joke compared to the BlueChart CD. The level of detail is an exact duplication of NOAA paper charts--very, very exact and very, very detailed. I use this software with my GPSMAP 162, and the only drawback is that with the detail level set to high, it slows the cloak redraw rate down considerably. but, when you're actually on the water, this isn't even noticeable. Bottom line--this is a great offering.

Map Controls The maps can be controlled using a multiplicity of methods, including the traditional push-button zooming, which drills in/out while keeping the map precisely centered. Drag and Zoom CursorAlso, holding down the left mouse button enables you to draggle and zoom, left-to-right, across the map, and moving the mouse in the same manner but in the opposite direction zooms out.
3-D Map Views and Flyovers See the ground in vivid detail using the 3-D map views and controls. These realistic views also retain the various elements you add to your customized maps--trails, MapNotes, GPS waypoints, and Leave a employ objects. The split-screen framework lets you see 2-D and 3-D maps side by side, with linked Draw tools that move and update in tandem. Draw Add MapNotes; draw your own circles, polygons, and squares; tactics the area of your draw objects--even draw in your own roads and route on them--these are amazingly powerful obtain tools for the money.
Measure The Measure Tool lets you measure linear gap and area on the map based on the units chosen in the Display tab of the Options dialog box. Draw polygons on the map and see the ethical footage or acreage of plots of land.
Info Right-click on the map to learn more about what's underneath your cursor. Lat/Lon, names of streets and bodies of deuterium oxide--even local radio station information--can be viewed in this manner. Moreover, the bottom toolbar of the software displays a continuously updated readout of what's underneath your cursor.
Attaching Images, Web URLs, and Other Documents Add your own images, exist Web URLs, and diagrams and documents to the maps. Embed photos and diagrams showing rapid personnel what they will find at each location. Forever nothing to brag, but still best in its class.
I've been buying DeLorme map products for years - and with each concupiscence year, my love/hate relationship tilts a little more toward hate. My reasons for buying DeLorme Topo are perhaps a bit separate than most of its users. I am not an avid hiker, camper or outdoors person. I use Topo USA 8 and its predecessor to scout out correct locations for landscape photography. Pretty simple stuff - and Topo doesn't utilize it very well, but it is still the best in its class as far as similarly priced commercial products are concerned. The GUI is, putting it charitably, unearthly. DeLorme insists on using its own graphical interface, eschewing ordinary Windows conventions. At the bottom of the vet are a series of tabs, many of which are of no interest to the casual user such as myself. Fortunately, the tabs can be managed to meet alcohol desires. Foul User Interface and no Manual
Fortunately, I did not buy this software case as it came as part of a hardware/software bundle for the PN-40 (which, so far, appears to be a great GPS device). I purchased the PN-40 to serve keep track of my walking/hiking/kayaking journeys and have been very eager to put it to good use. Topo USA style 8.0, however, has been nothing but a poorly designed headache - I've now spent many hours trying to figure out what, faultlessly, it is capable of doing and trying to get it to connect with the PN-40. While the connection process is quite easily understood, the usability of the software is a completely different matter - without question, it is one of the most poorly designed and operator-unfriendly applications I've come across recently. Considering that this is version 8.0 only makes the blood-curdling user interface problem more apparent - didn't DeLorme bother to subject this petition to real users prior to its release?I've now spent most of the day trying to figure how, exactly, Topo USA...

Outstanding for outdoor navigation:
I'm not an outdoors connoisseur, but I do quite a lot of day hiking and backpacking in the Sierra Nevadas. I obtained this software with my purchase of the PN-40 Delorme Earthmate. I meditate on both are great products.Personally, I really like the Delorme Topos, visually. They aren't as minute as what you can get from other places, but I prefer the simpler maps. There's less clutter, and more of what I really want. All I really be in want of on my topo is elevation information that is readable and information regarding the major features that environs me, such as peaks and bodies of water. That what I use to navigate. I've heard some people complain about the detail, but as far as I'm concerned, less is more. I've hand-me-down the USGS versions, and I very much prefer the Delorme Topos.I've heard some people complain about the convolution of the software, but I haven't really found that to be the case. The software does use a layering metaphor, make of like Adobe Photoshop, but...

True-love nautical charts. I absolutely went hunting for them at the Alameda Flea merchandise the last in good time always we were there.
